4.1 The temporary works design brief
4.1.1
BS 5975-1:2024 clause 4.1.2 states that, except for very low risk temporary works, a design
brief should be prepared by the site team and issued to the TWD by the TWC.
4.1.2
BS 5975-1:2024 clause 10.2.3(d)(e)(f) states that, the PC’s TWC is responsible for confirming
that a design brief is prepared, any other works that could be affected, and any constraints
identified by the PWD are included.
4.1.3
BS 5975-1:2024 clause 10.3.3(i)(j) states that, the managing contractor’s TWC should verify,
in consultation with their project team, that an adequate design brief is prepared that considers
the actual conditions on site and, where required, providing copies to the PC’s TWC.
4.1.4
BS 5975-1:2024 clause 12.2.1 summarises the purpose of the design brief. It is considered the
first stage in the design risk assessment process, i.e., identifying site hazards, design
considerations and reflecting actual site conditions.
4.1.5
Whilst the TWC is not responsible for preparing the design brief, BS 5975-1:2024 clause 12.2.3,
states the TWC should verify that the design brief includes all relevant information stated in
clause 12.2.4.
4.1.6
Typically, a design brief would include the following information. This list is not comprehensive,
and a full list of inclusions can be found in BS 5975-1:2024 clause 12.2.4 and Annex A.

4.1.7
The following flow diagram provides a practical example of the process for designing scaffolding
with a suitable foundation stabilised by construction fixings tied into a steel reinforced concrete
frame building. This is for illustration purposes only.
