British and European Standards
4.3.3
European Standards (EN) are technical standards adopted by the European community drafted
and maintained by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN). British Standards (BS)
are produced by the BSI Group, incorporated under royal charter, and are the UK Government’s
designated national standards body. Following harmonization, some British Standards have been
replaced or superseded by European Standards and commonly referred to as BS EN’s. In
addition, BSI Group develops Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) in response to urgent
industry need that are developed more quickly than BS’s.
